Sad Spongebob appears to have big, whimpering blue eyes, he has a unique long nose and has a frown, a unusually big tear is coming out of his left eye, as he cries. He appears to be wearing white socks and black shoes, has brown pants on and a small white shirt. His skin color is yellow, and he is correctly a sponge.

The image of Sad Spongebob originates from the Christmas special episode in SpongeBob SquarePants, and the Christmas special episode of the TV show was made on December 6, 2000. When Spongebob's undersea Christmas gets shattered by Squidward, he is made to pose for a picture in front of his coral Christmas tree, leading to the exaggerated, tearful photo.
